You say that the M7 tap was 1.25 in pitch???
I seem to remember (from the top of my head) that the standard is 1mm pitch. That's what I beleive Volvo is using.
That's the beauty of it. M6 have a 1mm pitch as do the M7.
Roughly speaking, when drilling for M6 you can use a 5mm drill (especially in aluminum). In hard materials you might need to step it up to 5.2mm drill.
And the similar goes for the M7 thread. You use a 6mm drill.
Well, when you have ripped the threads out of a M6 hole in aluminum, you pretty much have a 6mm clean hole with maybe a slight hint of 1mm pitch threads left, and that is exactly what you need to tap it to M7x1.
Since you are working with aluminum you can't use brute force when tightening anyway so the threads you have created will hold up just as good as the original ones did.
