I hate to say this, but there are three 900s in my most-frequented junkyard right now, and none of them have accident damage.
1. '89 900 turbo automatic- 150k
2. '87 900S automatic- 157k
3. '91 900 automatic- 154k
My auto died at 157. A post from a few years back lists 200,000 kilometers as the service life of the auto. That translates to 156,900 miles or so.
If you want to stick with it, drain, refill, and drive a day on the ATF and repeat it no less than twice. Yep- Type F ONLY. This is the only thing that made mine work better, but it lasted less than a week, then it was back to 3200 RPM shifting, lurching in gear, sucking gas, no acceleration, et cetera.
My car still exists today because I converted it to a 5-speed, now getting 8-10 MPG better than the auto. I am no mechanical genius, but being prepared and patient got me through the job.
OPINION!!!!--> Saab 900 automatics are a waste of resources and are not what was originally designed for the car, i. e. JUNK. (end of opinion)
The owner's manual and nearly all other specifications for that car say 3750 miles on an oil change because of the turbo, right? Especially since you're chugging such a fast engine speed, this becomes important.
Bearer of bad news, yes. Then again, I survived the experience, as did my car. (187k now) Also, if nothing is wrong yet, get AAA and drive it until it dies.
