You don't say what year the car is. Some years, they used gear oil in the original fill, which smells very sulfury and burnt and, even if it was originally filled with 10W30, the previous owner may have sweitched it to gear oil.

It should really be changed every year to get the particles of synchronizer brass, bits of reverse gear, etc. out of the oil sump. Some people change it every 2nd oil change.

If you do change it out, make sure whether it's gear oil or motor oil. You can put gear oil in a transmission that has motor oil but you don't want to do the reverse. Motor oil has detergents that gear oil doesn't and it will bring all sorts of stuff into suspensoin, causing much more wear than you want to think about.

When you do change the transmission oil, change it, run it for a week or so, change it, run it for another couple of weeks and change it again to get as much of the particles out as you can.

When I changed the transmission oil in my '89 SPG a few years back, it had a thick brassy sheen like the "gold" paint that you can buy for model cars and planes. That was from the synchros.

Some people swear by Redline, Honda MTL, or Mobil 1 gear oil. I just use 10W30 and change it every other engine oil change.

The engine and transmission don't share the same oil sump.
