I don't know when they made the change. Maybe someone who had cars in those transition years could tell us.
I believe that a 75 weight gear is closest to the viscosity of a 10 weaight engine oil. Redline MTL, Honda MTL, are that viscosity and Mobil 1 gear oil is available as 75 weight. Avoid hypoid lubes, though - they have all sorts of things that are told to corrode the synchros.
Guys who live in the northern US states have posted that Redline shifts very well in cold weather and has increased the longevity of their transmissions under harsh service conditions. Your results may be different with an original, untouched transmission, though.
