Both of our C900s ('85 N/A 8v & '90 N/A 16v) spec 10W-30 motor oil for the manual tranny, with 10W-40 motor oil or 75 wt gear oil as the alternates. I can definitely tell you that dino 10W-30 was wa-a-a-ay too stiff at 0°F. I wouldn't use anything less than semi-syn at your temps. Sometime in the next month I'll be changing both cars over to Rotella T Syn 5W-40, but if your local Saab dealer can get the Euro version of Saab's 5W-30 semi-syn (ACEA A3/B3 rated) then that would work too.
The link will take you to an outline of what I did nearly a year ago. Both cars are shifting excellently! I highly recommend Auto-Rx for both the tranny & engine of a car with unknown history. I won't recommend Redline simply because one of the local garages swears by it for Saab manuals, but also insists the tranny's max life with "the best lube" (Redline) is only 120k miles!! Most (all?) of the stories I've heard about Saab trannies going 250k+ miles have been on motor oil.
The chart below shows comparable viscosities between different lube grading systems. The differences between gear oil & motor oil viscosities are due to different measuring temps; gear oils were originally measured at lower temps ('cuz RWD in-line trannies never got as hot as our FWD stacked configuration), so the same oil would be thicker in the tranny. I don't recall exactly, but I think it was measured somewhere around 140°F.
