I think that the conductive foil on the '85 is different than the one in your '89. But, the defrost repair kit idea sounds like it might be a keeper. I don't know how well it will adhere to the plastic, but it's well worth a try.
For the LED bulb idea, do a search on this board for "LED". There were a few posts with some good specific information on how to do it. There's always the option of doing Indiglo faces and getting rid of the bulbs altogether. *That* is such a cool idea.
On the odometer gear idea, a few people have reported that they've used loctite to secure the cracked odometer drive gear to the shaft. It usually just gets loose instead of falling off. One of these days, I'll try it myself.
The one thing with the '89-onwards speedometer is that you need to remove the needle to take the back of the unit off to access the gear. I asked about that a while ago and got a good straightforward procedure for keeping the speedometer calibration:
- Gently lift the end of the needle over the stop pin and let it find its natural resting position.
- mark that resting spot with a pencil so you can reinstall the needle in that position and lift it back over the stop pin..
Then you can pull off the needle, undo the screws that hold the speedometer guts to the gauge face, and access the gear.
