It's really nothing new, people have been customizing cars since the '40s and there's always some new fad. In the '70s everyone was customizing work vans, there were half a dozen national magazines on custom vans, there were rallies and meets, businesses sprang up to make and install all of the stuff--and then it all went away. I suppose customizing is an expression of individualism, which contributes to the lack of value. Even people who like that sort of thing don't want to buy someone else's custom car--they want to do one themselves.
