When an inner driver (same as companion shaft?) goes bad, what is the source of vibration? Repair of ID isn't covered in Bentley, TwinSaabs guide only shows a rather vague picture of the business (exterior, tripod-engaging) end of the ID shaft. I gather that the three lobes on that end engage in the spaces between tripod bearing parts and thereby allow flex in drivetrain as axle moves up and down.

My car vibrates on acceleration, and I can understand that as resulting from intermittant/irregular contact between lobes of ID and tripod bearings as the driveshaft spins. Acceleration places high loads at particular points of contact that may not be engaged at road/steady speed.

The preceding may or may not be correct and I'm interested in any corrections or further insight. The problem with that model is that it doesn't explain why the same vibration/shudder occurs at stop-- simple idle or (made worse) during power brake. Tripod bearing may be under load then, but I don't see where a loaded but un-moving driveshaft yields vibration.

Why not motor mount(s)?
