The difference between modern "winter" tires and all season tires as soon as there is any slippy/frozen stuff on the ground is fantastic; it is not just taking off and stopping, but turning too - the all seasons, even if they get you going initially just push once you try to turn. I have a set of Michelin Artic Alpins - a winter tire, good for slush, ice, sleet and moderate amounts of snow on my 99 9-3. They are not thick, knobby "snow" tires, and consequently ride and handle quite nicely (for winter tire). Only comment about the tire is the jet engine noise I get on wet roads, something I can live with for the way the grip in freezing rain etc.
