Welcome to the community. I have an '89 that I've been driving for the longest of any of my cars over the last 30 years.
The instrument backlighting is controlled by a little rheostat under the left side of the instrument panel. If you don't get any change from turning it, it might be that the lights themselves have gone bad. You access them by removing the speaker panel on the dash. When you remove the speaker panel, be careful that the spring clip on the rear right corner doesn't snag on the vinyl and tear or crack it. That would be a starting point for one of the famous dash cracks.
The instrument lights are the two large light holders on the back of the instrument cluster. be careful when you turn them to remove and re-install them because the plastic foil with the wire traces is kind of delicate. I forget what the number for the bulbs is.
Gor the keys, get the steel keys if you can. The ignition lock cylinder tends to bind a bit, so it can twist and break brass keys. A good automotive locksmith in a major metro area *should* be able to make up steel keys for you. But, if you can't find one who can do steel keys, a dealer will be the next place to try. They should be able to use the number on the key to nake you a new one.
Don't be shy about asking questions. Answering SAAB questions is way better than watching (un)reality shows for a lot of us :-)
