No evidence but: The average first buyer of a vehicle drives it regularly for about 5-6 years. If the car still works after 5-6 years, the owner gets a new car and keeps the old one. The old car sits around the driveway for about 3-4 years until the original owner decides to part with it. The next owner drives it regularly again for 3-4 years then parts with it. The next owner (if not the junkyard) also drives it regularly. This would subtract about 3-4 years from the 15k miles per year assumption. So a 12 year old car would have about 128k miles on it.
If the car's a convertible, I'd put the average mileage much lower. Many convertible owners use a second car for commuting and/or winter driving.

'97 900set 125k: more like RayF's scenario
'87 900s 250k?: broken odo, thrice, bought it 5 years ago with odo broken at 177k
