1) You need to know your car. By stating that you were unsure if you were an 8 or 16 valve, you show that you need to read up. A 16 valve engine has a larger and obviously diferent valve cover (amoungst other things). Saabs a finicky. If you can't service it yourself you are in for a rough ride. You can't service what you don't understand. Buy a 16 valve Bentley's Auto repair manual and study it. You can buy them on E-bay, Amazon.com (see link below), etc... It is a manual second only to the Saab original factory manuals.
2) An MBC or manual boost controler will help you boost HP and costs about 22 dollars to build. Be careful not to set to too much boost. You can also twist the wastegate screw to adjust for more boost, but again you run in to the problem of setting for too much boost.
3) Use only 93 octane. Low octane leads to engine pre-detonation. The knock sensor senses this, retards timing, and you lose HP.
4) On the APC unit (not the APC computer), on the middle of the 3 nipples, there is a small restrictor. Remove it with a dental tool and insert and even smaller restrictor (smaller hole in the center).
5) Search the BB for instructions on how to reset the potentiometers on the APC computer control unit. Search the BB on how to upgrade the same unit.
6) Use only NGK series 7 plugs. For some reason they work better with Saabs. My old Bosch platinums required time each morning to warm up. The NGK7's eliminated that annoyance. I am told that the NGK's have longer neck so they sit further into the cylinder head so more spark sees gasoline. (Honestly though, I have no idea. They definately work better though).
