AGREE - Crown rebuilts are not good Posted by Saabpilot [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: I have done those >, ChipJ, Sat, 8 Jan 2005 15:07:13 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I replaced both of my front calipers on my '87 earlier this year and the left side has continually vibrated like crazy. I would not buy another set done by Crown.
I also agree that removing your main caliper bolts will be likely the most difficult part since they are likely rusted. I use a 4' antenna mast from Radio Shack that fits over the end of my socket wrench...it makes a great breaker bar for the whopping cost of under $10. You do need either the special caliper piston turning tool or in the past believe it or not I have turned the piston with a pair of needle nose pliers.
Make sure you lubricate the sliding yoke of your new calipers well with brake caliper grease. I also purchased a set of Speedbleeders recently but have not installed them; they would have made it a one person job. My master cylinder was leaking so I replaced it at the same time, too and made a nice big project out of this. Also put in stainless steel brake lines up front in lieu of the rubber OEM ones.
If you buy rebuilt calipers make sure they are guaranteed by the seller. And remember we're all here for support if you run into a glitch.
