The dash bulb controls the current into the D+. Connect it directly, and you risk burning out the alternator.
Try a few tricks -
OK, the bulb doesn't come on when you turn the key to ON, but don't start. Disconnect the thin wire from the D+ and touch it to ground. Turn the car to ON. Does the bulb light? If so, the circuit from that wire all the way to the bulb, through the ignition switch to the battery is GOOD. Light doesn't come on? Then something is wrong with the wiring. If you absolutely positively know the bulb is OK, then it could be as simple as a poor connection at the bulb.
OK, once you know that the circuit to the D+ line is OK (grounding it turns the bulb on with ignition ON), all that is left is the alternator. And the ALTERNATOR GROUND. With the wire on the D+ and the ignition key ON, the light is off. Touch a wire from the alternator body to chassis ground. DOes the light come on? If so, the ground strap from the alternator to chassis needs cleaning.
The D+ doesn't need power on it once the engine is running, ASSUMING that the alternator is charging - that the alternator voltage is 13 or more volts.
If the wiring is good, and the alternator ground is good, about all that is left is a bad connection internal to the alternator for the D+. At that point, it's rebuilt alternator time. But I bet you fix it before it comes to that.
