Re: advice on cleaning/renewing oil pump? Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: advice on cleaning/renewing oil pump?, kenS ![]() |
Cleaning the pump is easy - wipe it down with a lint-free cloth. It's just a housing and two big gears. As to what works, all those methods work.
I use the vaseline method. I don't find it that messy. Lay the pump housing face down. Pack some vaseline in to where the gears go, and drop in the gears. A bunch of vaseline smoooshes out. Wipe it off. The vaseline helps hold the gears in place when replacing the pump.
Messy? Yes, a little. But I find it's hard to keep myself clean when working on the bottom end of a car, anyway.
I would worry that putting some oil on the gears wouldn't allow the pump to prime properly. It might work just fine. It might not. 'Not' isn't something I like to consider. So a little vaseline works just fine for me. No big deal.
