I just recently did this and the vasiline part went pretty easy. The mess was not bad and after assembly (including belts), I cranked the engine with the fuel pump fuse removed. After that I had nearly immediate oil pressure. Just needed to do the oil change to remove the vasiline as suggested by Townsend.
The primary purpose of my project was to replace the Hall sensor. I used the spliced-in version from eEuroparts and replaced the HB at the same time. When I had it all together, the HB was rubbing on the sensor so I had to take the HB off again. After that, it was fine for a while but I have the impression that it is rubbing slightly again. I don't know yet how to explain to my wide that I might have to take it apart again without her asking me to take it to the garage. Hope you have better luck.
