About your leak theory...if your car doesn't leak, then it won't leak. Write that down, it'll be worth somethin' someday. However, if your car is old and the seals and gaskets are probably just as old, then you may notice more of a leak then you had. Just because it leaks doesn't mean it leaves driveway stains. If all your seals and gaskets are in good condition you shouldn't have any problems.
Do synthetics reduce engine wear? Yes. Is it worth it? Theres your grey area. Some people will never use synthetic, but just do oil changes regularly and their car will go 500K miles.
I would, personally, use synth in a turbo car. The oil is subject to much more heat, and that turbo gets a little pricey.
Personally, I wouldn't use synthetics in a non-turbo Saab. You can if you want, you've got nothing to lose, but if you stuck to a good brand of mineral oil or even synthetic blend then you'll have no problems as long as you change it often.
I'm sure there'll be 10000000 different opinions.
Good luck.
