I used to work for an automotive wholesale distributor. We delivered parts to local repair shops, all axles for all makes were the same price, $49.95 each. Some of the boot kits were $22. In the year and a 1/2 that I worked there, we did not sell 1 boot kit, but thousands of axles. It was definately not cost effective, after cleaning & labor, to replace the boot, then have to warranty the work afterward. If the end customer insisted on just a boot, they would put in the axle anyway and charge them for the boot replacement.
CV joints are inevitable failures for front wheel drive cars. A thicker, more durable boot will make them last longer. Saabs don't seem to "chew up" axles more than other makes. The passenger side tripod seems to be a little vulnerable due to proximity to the exhaust pipe. It tends to cook out the lubricant. This can also affect the condition of the passenger side inner driver, which commonly wears more than the driver's side. When the weather gets nicer, I will be wrapping the exhaust pipes on my Saabs with Ceramic fiber insulation tape, close to the inner driver.
