There is a weakness in the ball-and-socket joint that connects the latch release handle (over the license plate) with the latch release mechanism. It pops out, and you can pull on the handle all you want.
Yup, fold down the seats grab a flashlight, flat-blade screwdiver, torx driver, and optionally, a small putty knife. On the inside of the hatch is a fabric-covered panel. Up by the window are a few black discs with slots in them. Turn them CCW 1/4 turn, then pull them out. They don't unscrew - only 1/4 turn. Next, remove the inside grab handle - usually two torx screws, unless one was lost sometime in the past and replaced with a different head.
The bottom and sides of the panel are held in place with snap fasteners. Get the putty knife behind the panel on one side, and pull it straight back towards you. Start at one end and work your way around.
With the panel out, the latch mechanism is pretty obvious. There is a metal rod running from the release handle mechanism at the top to the latch at the bottom. Usually that rod comes apart at the socket joint. You can pop it back together, and it may hold for a few years, or a few days. I would wrap some wire around them to try and keep them together.
