I see it all the times when a car has failed smog check and they want me to look into the problem.
I don't like to "fix" the obvious problem on the car and send them home to do a smog check later on by themself.
You might find the bad O2 sensor right away but then the car could have a bad AMM, leaking FPR or a marginal catalytic converter on top of that, still failing the smog test.
You can easily loose a customer that way by having them come back over and over to "fix the same problem".
If I do a repair and then take it for a smog test I get to see myself how the repair turned out and the correlation between repairs and smog results.
It's quite interesting to see what and what not makes a car pass smog.
