One of my rules in mechanics is that multiple major components rarely fail together. since the failure of one tends to protect the others. So if a shop says your generator battery and starter are bad, they are probably wrong on at least 2.
I've been, as some on this list may have noticed, trying to trouble shoot 2 900s with FI gremlins. Replacing the O2 sensor on the '93 with the fairly new one from the '89 bought improvement, but it turned out to be only temporary, and after a short time with the new sensor in I was getting weird outputs from the sensor again, so yesterday I finally got around to sticking a brand new sensor in - no change. Just about then I notice an unfamiliar Saab sitting in a friends driveway. Turned out to be a '91 their daughter had abandoned with them. Like a flash I popped out the 019 AMM and stuck it in my car - car ran fine! Stuck mine in hers, and it ran bad just like mine.
Now here's the question. It seems very unlikely to me that the sensor and the AMM would fail simultaneously. I'm fairly sure the sensor failed from antifreeze after a major head gasket failure last month, but it seems odd that the AMM would follow so quickly. Or could one be destroying the other? Also, why would the used sensor I tried from the other car work normally for a little while then start acting up too? All very mysterious.
