Here's a little background: This winter, I purchased a nice 1988 900 Turbo via a Saabnet classified add. One of the claimed "upgrades" was a high compression engine (from an "S", so 10:1 CR) which was rebuilt 12K miles ago. I've been running 93 octane, and getting nearly stock full boost (up to orange/red border) at WOT on cold days, less now that it has warmed up in Colorado, due to increased charging temps.

Unfortunately, I've noticed one of the classic headgasket symptoms: pressurized expansion tank and coolant loss with no leaks. I don't notice any white smoke on warm up, though.

My questions are:

1) Will running full pressure turbo boosts with the 10:1 CR engine lead to headgasket failure?
2) If I were to replace the headgasket and run the car as a Light Pressure Turbo (LPT) will the headgasket last?
3) Any potential fueling problems doing this? 2.5 bar FPR, stock turbo injectors…
4) If 2 and 3 are OK, could I set my base boost to a very safe 3 psi, and get away with running lower octane gas which will limit max boost to perhaps 6-7 psi as the APC system detects the onset of knocking? This would be motivated by prices at the pump…

I know the LPT is a somewhat neutered Turbo, and someday I would probably drop in a 9:1 CR engine to make the car fly again, but I'd like to try to get a few economical miles out the car as is (but with a new HG!)

Thanks in advance – These Saabnet forums simply rule!

Jonathan
