Bad luck with the replacement rad - may be its part blocked and lack of flow is not allowing the system to cool effectively ( new one on the way)
Heater bypass valve is bad - As engine cools when heater is set to hot the engine cools relatively quick, does this show lack of circulation ? is this caused by the bypass valve ? This replacement came of a car I knew was god so can't be this
Heater bypass is plumbed in wrong - It's exactly the same as the old one cam off I even took a picture so I knew how the old one came off!
Oil is not cooling properly - blocked or damaged oil cooler, bad pump - checked pump by seeing if there is a healthy flow at the turbo pipes as its the furthest away for m the pump- there is and it's very strong flow, took rocker cover off and plenty of oil in the top case so seems to be getting up to the top of the engine ok so taking assumption all is ok there.
Cracked/warped head - possible but checked head for flatness and all seemed ok - didnt get pressure tested as various Saab sites say this is very rare in these heads.

I know having a heater on will cool the system but I'm only turning the setting nto hot not putting the fan so the temp release won't be that great will it ?

Could it be the heater bypass valve preventing good circulation ? what exactly does this do as it's spring loaded and Cant see why, can and should I bypass it all together ?

How much water pressure should there be at operating temp, I get a little I can't when opening the header tank but nothing like I think it should be.

Anyone have any ideas ? I'm happy with the rise in temp as that would occur when driven hard but I'm very worried about the lack in temp drop. As I say it reaches 4/5 of the gauge but no higher. Before the new pump went in it almost but not quite hit the red, say 7/8 of the way up the gauge but did drop to 4/5 quickly.

Is 4/5 the running temp and I have a no liniar gauge ( how would I tell this) the previous owner says the temp guage was Always in the middle no mater how he drove it, thing is I only had the car 3 weeks before it was hit so didnt get to know it much so cant say if this was happening then, I would have noticed the temp if it was high, it was also August so a hot month here in the UK ( well hot by our standards! ) and I did plenty of long distance during and got snagged in plenty of jams so I would have thought an overheat would have happened then. I'm worried if I drive the car it will over heat in a jam or that if it's running hot its doing lot of damage even if it sits at 4/5 on the gauge.

Car has done 220k, sounds as sweet now as it did the day it was made.

Anyone tell me what the min and max readings are on the gauge, in Celsius please ?

Thanks for reading.

Any help is greatly appreciated,

Mark
