Since your'e getting very little pressure buildup, my thought is that there is a leak somewhere in the system. It might not be related to the work you did on the headgasket or the radiator. Since it sat for a while, I'm wondering if the culprit might be something like a bad water pump seal.
You mentioned that it sat for 6 months after you brought the temperature down by adding hot water to the coolant tank. How much water did you add?
A few years ago, my '89 SPG exhibited hot-running symptoms like you describe. It turned out to be a bad water pump seal. An easy check is to look for a white stripe of burned glycol on the exhaust downpipe, in line with the water pump pulley.
I messed with things like a new expansion tank cap, but changing the water pump cured the problem immediately.
You might also want to look for pinhole leaks in the right angle crossover hose by the distributor and loose hose clamps.
