Non-Bosch Voltage Regulator

Hi,
Alternator crapped out on me the other day and called around for a VR for my bosch alt. However, the rip off artists up the street from me wanted $75 for a bosch one (they said it was for the kit, whatever that means) and NAPA had one for me for $32; however, it was not a bosch. Well, I tried to put the sucker in and it was a major struggle. The holes where the screws are are just a smidgen too close together so even though it is on, I'm not sure if it is a good idea to keep it. It is rectangular and bulky unlike the old one that I had, but I was desperate because my old one's brushes were barely there and this is my only car. Found one online for pretty cheap as well. Opinion anyone. Do you think I could screw up my car if I use this new one from NAPA? Or should I get a bosch one? Also, does anyone know what the plug on the outside of the alt. is called. Its the one with a black rubber rectangular box like plug with a female connector. I want to call it a capacitor, but I'm thinking it is a fuse? Does anyone know how to get a new one of those? Mine is all melted and falling apart. One last thing and then I will leave y'all alone. The ground wire connection to the frame (not the one coming from the alternator itself) but where it is actually grounded to is not bolted down well; therefore, it is sparking. I cant get the bolt loose at all. I'm thinking about cutting it and rebolting it somewhere else. Would that sparking be causing problems as well? Thanks everyone for your input. By my name I'm obviously a girl, but reading this messge board has taught me so much about my car that I love working on it but what I love most is pissing the mechanics off when they cant screw me around! THANKS!!!!!!!!!
