Dear Lisa:
You will find that Eric and I don't agree on much. That is the rub. My feeling is that placing the new regulator in under the stresses of being compressed by poorly positioned screws will warp the unit. My feelings are that given the heat the unit will experience the unit will warp more quickly. Now, if you only plan on owning the car for a little while longer, so what, leave the unit in place. If you plan on owning the car longer than spend the extra money on a piece that fits properly and will have less likelihood of failure.
Eric has a point. If it is in, why bother. But I have another point. I have seen and also read about on this BB many aftermarket parts that don't fit and then fail at the worst possible moment.
There is a compromise. Remove the new regulator and swap the brushes with the old regulator. Then re-install the old regulator. There is some crimping and soldering involved, but if you were able to get down to your alternator and get that other piece of crasp to fit while struggling in that tight area, I bet you are more than capable.
