There should be one bolt on either side of the knee bolster deep inside the firewall/door jam opening. Neither one should be a stud. Be careful, as there are 2 fastners on either side of these areas: 1 is for the knee bolster, and 1 is for the upper dash. In other words, the stud you see is probably not for the knee bolster. Keep looking as these bolts are pretty well-hidden behind wires and vacuum hoses that run their courses through these same areas. Either that, or the previous owner never re-installed one of the bolts since it was too difficult (the trick to putting them back in is to apply chewing gum or some sort of sticky stuff to the head of the bolt so that it stays attached within the socket as you slowly install it into the screw hole in the bolster).
As for the inside attachments, there are the four screws holding the ashtray assembly, the large bolt directly behind this assembly as well as what this bolt screws into (yes, that thing is removable with a socket), the screws/bolts holding the center console in place (2 at the bottom under the accordian-looking filler behind the shifter, and 2 on either side). I think that's about it.
Do a search on knee bolster or knee kicker on this board. There are plenty of procedures posted.
