My parents had an '81 900T (in '81) with exactly the same problem. The dealer was never able to figure out what the cause was.... That said:
Gas goes from the filler pipe, to the tank, to the pump, under the car through the accumulator, under the car, through the driver's side shock tower, through the fuel filter, into the fuel distributor, back under the car and into the tank.
The vapor recapture goes out of the tank, up the c-pillar, along the roofline (through/above the headliner), down the a-pillar, through the firewall, along the fenderwall, and into the ELCD (charcoal cannister) at the front of the car on the driver's side (under the ignition module).
Possibilities for either gas or vapor leaks are pretty much everywhere, but unless you can observe puddles or leaks somewhere, I'd suspect the problem to be somewhere in the vapor recapture circuit - that's where the dealer suspected the leak was in the old '81. Maybe the ELCD itself is disconnected (common) or maybe the line is broken, but I *imagine* an actual gas leak would be reasonably obvious.
HTH...
