I usually "borrow" (for lunch money) my machinist's 20-ton press as well. that's not the problem. 5-6 mm is too thick a wire guage in my opinion. The official SAAB tool is not that thick. If you don't want to purchase the tool from SAAB or any of the other aftermarket manufacturers that produce them, you could do the job with heavy coat hanger wire or bucket handle wire.
Some people use old spark plug wires but they get some "crush" that reduces diameter to about half. I have the whole collection of SAAB tools and haven't overpumped a slave yet, knock on wood. It's maybe the one factory tool worth getting, although that trick flywheel stop would be nice....
