When you were pumping the clutch while the spacer was still in the pressure plate, the slave did not have the pressure plate fingers to push the piston all the way back into the cylinder between pumps. So, you just kept pumping the slave piston farther and farther until it came out of the cylinder and sprang a leak. If you are very lucky the piston isn't jammed at an angle in the cylinder. But if it is and it probably will be, you get to do-over.
When I made this mistake, I ended up sawing through the slave piston so that I could get the pressure plate and disk out in order to install a new slave cylinder. If you clean off the disk and pressure plate with brake cleaner, you should be able to reuse the disk and pp.
