You didn't say whether your car is a sedan or a hatchback...
Well to start, here's a page to test the central locking system:
http://www.townsendimports.com/Web/electrical_system_folder/centrallock.htm
Do you hear a "chunk" coming from the rear of the car?
I just repaired my trunk lock yesterday, (86 900S 3door)the central locking worked but both the rod that moves the slider out of the way so that the outside button doesn't make contact with the latch, and the powerlock rod had come off the lock cylinder, so neither turning the key in the lock or the central locking locked the trunk. The slider (styrene) platform (steel) also had a buildup of rust which took an hour of working and liberal doses of PB to allow free movement. Probablyu hadn't worked for five years! On my car all the mountings for the trunk cover are press on or quick release screws. You might be able to remove that cover from the inside...
Best of Luck,
2nd Saab
