There are two bits for the recirculation- one is the solenoid and the other is the servo. The solenoid is in the right front footwell through 1987 and was moved under the passenger-side of the dash beginning in 1988. This of course assumes a left-hand-drive car. The servo is attached to the recirculation flap that closes off the cabin air intake when the recirculation button is depressed, or when the distribution switch is set to max. vent (fan speed 4, panel vents) or Off.
At least that's what it is supposed to do. Mine leaks vacuum so I have the servo disconnected and the vacuum fitting at the firewall plugged.
Using a vacuum pump, suck down on the servo and see that it closes and stays closed. If it does not move or closes and then opens again, it leaks and should be replaced.
