I'll paraphrase what Anders posted to me when I was in a similar situation three years ago - I couldn't push the old driver out of the carrier bearing on the sick transmission so I ended up transplanting the whole donor assembly into my transmission. It was easy to push the donor driver out of its carrier bearing.
He wrote something to the effect of: given the wear that is probably there in the pinion bearings, it probably won't cause any harm because it's already kind of sloppy. But, if you were to rebuild the transmission at some point, you'd need to go through the procedure for setting the shims so you have the proper backlash.
You will want to use the shims from your transmission, though. That'll at least get it in the ballpark.
That's not an exact quote, and Anders will probably want to correct me (which is always welcome.)
This was 3 years ago, and my transmission is getting noisier (and spitting out some bits of bearing cage), so please take what I'm writing in this post with caution.
