I wouldn't move the whole aluminum housing over to your tranny just like that. It opens up for problems since you don't know exactly the shim stack size.
One reason why those shims are used is that no transmissions, bearings and carrier housings are exactly the same and therefore the preload of the bearing is set by those shims.
If you on the other hand remove the snap ring and knock the driver out of the housing, you are safe since then you are using the same shims and carrier housing as before.
You also get a chance to replace that seal which is usually a source of leaks.
