How to test a/c compressor...

In thinking more on what happened (see previous post). I don't think that it was the wiring harness that was smoking. There is not enough weight to it to have been able to bear down that hard on the moving a/c belt. I think the harness has been that way for awhile now and has been having the plastic covering melted away little by little over time. Thank goodness I caught it now since the covering is gone and the wires would have been next.
What I think happened is that the compressor seized. I noticed just before the screeching sound and the smoke that the cabin was not as cold anymore and that the air coming out of the vents was comparable to the outside air. I think the compressor bound up inside causing it to not be able to spin but the a/c belt was still trying to spin around the pulley, causing the sound and smoke. When I turned the a/c off before getting out of the car, that's when everything stopped.
What I don't understand is that the clutch on the compressor is still able to spin when I put the a/c system on. If that's possible, does that mean that it just is not attached to whatever is inside the compressor to get it to move the freon around?
How do I test the compressor to see if it's shot? I looked at all the hosing and condensor, and cannot find any signs of leaking freon (I was looking for an oily residue). Looking into the sight glass shows no sign of the freon moving. I want to rule out any chance of a leak to determine that it is in fact the compressor.
