With the car "off", you should be able to engage the clutch. You should hear a distinctive click.
ONce the clutch is engaged, you should not be able to turn the compressor by hand (i.e. no tools).
Also, look at the clutch, there should not be any evidence of overheating or other wise burnt, or scortched areas around the clutch plates.
