Do you want a normally aspirated car or a turbo? The S is a non turbo 16 valve, the SPG is the King of the 900 turbos. Go for the SPG, it's a lot more fun.
After having serval SPGs, 2 9000 Aeros, and a Viggen, here is my 2-cents on approaching a Saab. I think that any car that is 10 to 15 years old WILL have problems.
My daily driver right now is an smokin 88 900 SPG. It's quite strong and reliable. But the reason why it is that way is because I took everything out of the car and replaced everything (engine, tranny, clutch, heating, cooling, cables, interior, etc.. anything that wears) at the tune of about $6000. but then again, I only paid $600 for it from an owner who thought it was getting unreliable. After 200k miles, I had at least a couple of pages of things to repair and replace. Some I did, some I have the shop do.
So my philosophy is, I won't paying alot for a newer saab and think it's automatically more reliable and will give me years of trouble free driving. I think the opposite. I get the older one with 200k miles but a good body (no rust) and completely rebuild it so that I know what I have. This probably doesn't answer your questions, but I'm trying to give you a different perspective to approaching your project.
