My SPG gets great gas milage! (Well, only if i keep out of the boost, it runs like an S). I run my SPG with only 87 octane even with a modified APC box. I can even push 18-psi of boost on a cool day without detonation. I have advanced the timing to 19 deg BTDC to increase torque and improve gas milage. I don't even have a recurved boost retard or a BTM (although i'm planning on getting one). I can get 33 mpg if I drive it "nicely". For me to run the cheep gas, I have a RRFPR and I run water injection (lots of water injected starting at 5 psi). The other key that let me run this setup and keep with the low octane gas is making sure my ingition setup is strong. I installed the Magnicor 8mm wires and NGK BCP7EIX (Iridium) plugs. This made a world of difference. So you can have your cake and eat it too.
Thanks to Brad at Georges Imports for giving me the ideas.
