Of all the engines properly timed I have seen, the camshaft notch have never been on the exhaust side of the bearing cap index.
Some engines that start to reach the outer limits of timing chain/guide wear it can be tempting to set the mark on the exhaust side since it seems to match up better than placing it on the intake side of bearing cap but it is wrong.
As more as the timing chain parts wear down the camshaft notch WILL move away from the index and go toward the intake side.
I did have an engine ones where the parts were so worn that it was possible to move both cams one tooth ahead but I could feel the engine being a little bit rough on take off and tugging a little bit when cranking over.
