There's 2 possibilities outside of the transmission.
The bottom of the shift lever engages a ball&socket that twists a steel shaft. This shift shaft goes forward under the console. Just a couple inches forward of the shift lever, it passes thru a big rubber bushing. If that bushing is torn up or dislocated, it lets the shaft move sideways, when it's supposed to have a pure twisting motion.
Then that same shaft continues thru the firewall towards the tranny. Between the firewall & tranny is a flexible coupling. That can fall apart if it gets soaked with oil.
Put the car up on ramps or stands. Have someone work the shift lever while you watch that shift shaft from underneath. The motion of the shaft, especially at the firewall, should be pure twisting & fore-aft sliding. If it moves sideways look at the shift box bushing. If the coupling is coming apart you'll be able to see that.
