bushing at the front of the shifter assembly (which the shift lever goes into), which deteriorates if a previous owner used petro-based grease in it. If you take out the accordian spacer in front of the shifter and look down as you move the shifter from side-to-side, the chrome-plated shift rod that comes out the nose of the aluminum shifter assembly should move in a pure twisting motion. If it moves side-to-side, the bushing must be replaced.

Let us know if that's the case and we'll let you know how it can be replaced if you DIY.
