I also have an '85 and have been trying to find a mysterious air leak in my car too. I'm not exactly sure how the advance and ELCD (charcoal cannister) vacuum ports work, but I've heard them refered to as 'ported' vacuum, and I think that they're positioned in the throttle body so that their vacuum depends on throttle plate position. I'm not sure that they are tied into the idle bypass. I plan to clean my throttle body soon, so I'll take a hard look at that.
By the way, your '85 may have the same ELCD as mine (p/n 9349358), which is like the ones used on 8 valve cars and is not covered in Bentley. Later 16 valve cars had an ELCD with a line to the throttle body *and* to the intake manifold (in addition to the line from the tank), and even later cars had electrically operated ELCDs. I could suck air through the vacuum line, which I'm not sure is wrong, but I ordered a new ELCD anyway. I'll let you know what happens when I get the new one.
Have you checked out your brake booster as the possible leak? My booster is definitely leaking, but otherwise works ok, so I would say you can't rule it out just because it seems to be working ok for braking. I found I could continously suck a little bit of air through the booster, which is wrong - it should hold a vacuum. Then I tried plugging the line to the manifold, and the car ran much better. In fact, once I did that if I opened the oil filler while the car was running it would sputter and die (you suddenly introduce unmetered air through the PCV system), which is a good sign. There's a seal that goes in between the booster and the brake master cylinder that apparently fails commonly, causing an air leak.
Speaking of the PCV system, that may also be a possible leak source. I've heard of oil filler tubes cracking and admitting air, for example. Another test you might try is to pull the nipple out of the grommet on the valve cover, and plug it. If that makes your car run better it would suggest that you've got air leaking into the crankcase somewhere, which shouldn't be happening.
Good luck. I'll let you know what I find out about the throttle body and the ELCD.
