Finally Decided it is a Head Gasket

OK, I have finally decided it is a head gasket. Although oil level stays quite constant I do have the white residue around the exhaust manifold discussed here on Oct 1 and although I have repeatedly flushed the cooling system and replaced the coolant reservoir I now have an oil residue in that reservoir. I also had a water pump failure and had obvious oil residue there. A little oil goes a long way in water. So, my question would be how long do I wait to get it repaired and as a follow up to that, is this a repair I can perform myself. I am handy but not a mechanic. I do not want to cut the head or do other damage that I can avoid, even if it will be $1000. Thanks!!
