I wouldn't wait too long. You know it's going to go, you don't know WHEN it's going to go. If you do it now, you'll save yourself from a tow and possible engine damage. In my case, I had to have it towed and had the additional fun of replacing the exhaust system a week after I put the car back on the road.
It will cost ~$1,000 for a shop to do the job, or you can do it yourself for $250. This is not a difficult job, see the Townsend site for an excellent writeup. If you decide to DIY, don't start until you have the socket for the head bolts in a 1/2" drive. While the head is off, take it to a machine shop and have them test it for leaks and check the surface for flatness. Now is the best time to replace hoses, belts, thermostats, and temp switches. I think I read that you're using green antifreeze - don't. Buy the Mercedes Banz anti-freeze agent ($20) or Zerex G-5 ($10) - all antifreezes are not equal. If you're going for the ultimate in cosmic karma use distilled water.
