All of the vacuum lines that had any hint of a problem were replaced. Here's a little history that may help.
2 years ago I bought this car from my brother. He had bought it two years before, dorve it for a few months and then parked it in a field because it had a stalling issue and he didn't have the time/interest to fix it.
He was going to get rid of it so I bought it for 900 bucks.
I spent the next 5 months working on the car. Completely removed and renewed the interior (mice had made their home in there and the smell...).
The car ran ok but not great. I replaced all worn vacuum lines and worn gromets. Replaced the AIC, alternator, temp sensors (both), fan switch, flushed the cooling system, set the timing, learned about turbo chrarged engines as it was my first, and replaced the distributor to fix the stalling issue which was the hall effect generator.
The car was running great and I drove it for 8 months as my daily driver. Then it was hit by a cement truck in the drivers front corner which bent the radiator cross memebr and fender and caused some frame damage.
I parked the car in my driveway put a cover on it and spent the next 8 months trying to figure out how to fix it. Put in a new radiator cross member after beating the frame and fender straight, replaced the clutch and hydraulics while I had everything out of the way. Now the car looks as good as it did.
So the car was back to pre accident condition and I decided to tackle the high NOx which I attributed to a lean condition.
Many of the gromets and lines that I had replaced had deteriorated, which shocked me seeing how they were less than 2 years old and had less than 5000 miles on them.
I have checked, rechecked and rechecked again everything I know that could go wrong. I have used test equipment to make sure values were accepltible.
Something is missing on my list in the first post of this thread. Something I don't know about because if I knew about it I would have checked it. That's what I need to know, what I missed.
I'm not inept when it comes to automotive work. I have a 78 BMW 320i, a 81 BMW 320i and 84 BMW 318i, All with some form of Bosch fuel injection so I know all about the importance of vacuum. I've worked on all kinds of cars and motorcycles. I don't claim to be an expert by any means, but I do feel that I have a modest amount of experience and would only let a dealer/ independant do something that is physically impossible for me which required some type of special tool that I cant get.
I'm sure I could figure this out given the time, but thats why we come here isn't it. Hopefully someone else has gone through this and can say "oh if you've done all that it must be (insert solution here)"
