real old Detroit stuff, ARE mechanical in how they hold the glass. Glass is held in groove in gasket, lip of gasket is "zipped" around the edge of sheet metal of the body by pulling a cord laid in the outer groove. Then the trim moulding strip is put into the grooves in the gasket, and that stiffens it so it won't flex enough to let the glass just be popped out again from minor pressures.
The adhesive is there to put into the groove in gasket so it seals well to the glass, and maybe to lay under the outer lip so it seals well down to the paint. Probably not needed when gasket is new.
Saab also has a later added twist, flaps on the inside that screw to the body, to make less likely for glass to pop out if your head hits the windshield.
