hummmm...loud tapping? That happened to mine suddenly at 151K...accomapnied by smoke andlousy running. It cured itself and ran to 283K whan I had the time to change the engine finally. As I has suspected all along...broken ring. The tapping never went away, but synthetic oil and pure luck kept it on the road all these years. Back in 1995 I had another high milage 900S do the exact same thing...sudden onset of a loud tap...that motor was toast! I would do a compression check ASAP...if that checks out OK go on to ignition leads/dizzy cap/rotor/hall sensor connection on the dizzy (if your car is NOT EZK)/vacuum leaks.
If compression is off on #3...maybe head gasket...but maybe you did a ring!
