Let's talk about leather

Those of you who bought new an 80's 900 with leather seats - how would you describe the original leather quality? Were they a nice soft leather, or more of a durable stiff quality? I have a set of donor front seats from an 86 that are in very good shape, but with evidence of dryness. I'm thinking of restoring and re-dying them. If I use a quality conditioner from say, Leatherique, what would I end up with assuming the leather can be restored to near new? Interestingly, from what I've read, the color surface of those older seats is a lacquer based paint/dye, and to re-dye them would require removing as much of it as possible with lacquer thinner, plus wet sanding with a leather prep formula. For optimum conditioning, it is recommended to apply an initial coat of conditioner, then remove/sand the surface, then apply additional conditioner until the desired level of softness is acquired. Those of you who might know, how soft and supple should I expect? I won't be disappointed if it's a low grade of leather and I don't end up with a surface as soft as my winter driving gloves. I'll do 'em nice regardless. Better than these dusty velour seats!
