The leather covers in my SPG which I bought new in '86 weren't very consistent seat to seat.... the back seat and passenger's seat were made with thick, heavily textured leather while the driver's seat was done with very soft and smooth leather -
it seemed to be thinner as well. Seems like it should've been the other way round if there had to a difference like that - the driver's seat wore out quickly while the others hung in for quite awhile. I used the SAAB leather conditioner over the years but the leather still dried out and cracked, guess age and skin fatigue finally got 'em. The vinyl parts of the covers still look great.
I talked to an upholstery guy and he advised me against using dyes and stains - said he's never seen any that don't crack off after awhile .... I've decided to replace everything with new matching leather ( my car only has 87K and change on it so I'm gonna keep it for another twenty years ) and am awaiting delivery - it'll be nice not to have to cover the driver's seat with sheepskin anymore.
