getting creative with a heater core....will it work?

So on my way to the family Thanksgiving dinner while stuck in a traffic jam, i suddenly start smelling antifreeze and then it starts dripping all over my feet. Openeing the hood revealed that the top hose leading in the the heater core had broken off. The plastic part the hose fits over is only about an inch long now. As a quick fix, I just ran the top hose back into the engine where the bottom hose connected, bypassing the heater all together. I've gotten there and back but I am now frozen. I was thinking of gluing a sleeve of PVC pipe over the remaining stub of the top heater core pipe and then reattaching the hose. Does anyone see any problems here? Going to get started on this as soon as I thaw out.
